ASM International - The Materials Information Society - has designated Heroult Electric Arc Furnace an Historical Landmark. In 1907, at Shasta County, the first electric arc furnace in the western hemisphere was utilized for the direct production of iron from this area’s indigenous resources of magnetite (Fe3O4), charcoal, limestone, and hydro electricity. It operated at the town of Herouit, CA, named in honor of the furnace inventor Paul Herouit of France (who assisted in the installation).

ASM International has designated Sloss Furnaces an historical landmark.
Sloss Furnaces, which became operative in 1882, were instrumental in establishing the iron industry in the South. Modernized in 1927-1928, they remained in operation until 1970.

The Magma Copper Mine AC system designed by the Carrier Corporation was the first underground mechanical air conditioning system in North America. The initial installation of refrigerated cooling equipment in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona was necessary due to the increase in temperature lower into the mine. Below the 2000-foot level, the increase in rock temperature is approximately 1½ degrees F. per 100 feet of depth. The rock temperature on the 2000-foot level is 109°.
This ironworks exemplified the adaptability required for industrial survival in a dynamic technical environment. It was a major western producer of mechanical equipment used in mining (especially large hydraulic machines), ship propulsion, irrigation, power generation, optical telescope mounts, and nuclear research.
